Located in southwestern Ohio, Wilberforce University is a liberal arts institution with a rich history and bright future. A historically black university, the school is located in Wilberforce, Ohio, where it was founded in 1856, becoming the first college to be owned and operated by African Americans. In the 150 years since this landmark event, the university has put a high standard of student living at the center of its development. Wilberforce attracted such icons as W.E.B. DuBois as professors, and began extending its resources to students from South Africa. By studying at at Wilberforce University, students can elect to pursue a variety of majors, organized into five overarching disciplines: Humanities, Social Sciences, Business and Economics, Engineering and Computer Sciences and the Natural Sciences. In addition, students are prepared for work after graduation by the requirement of cooperative education. Through this program, students are placed in internships that are designed to offer hands-on career experience as well as academic instruction.

In addition to the internship program, students may live in off campus housing to enhance their interaction with the surrounding community. Since the town has a population of just over 1,500, Wilberforce University plays heavily into local culture.
