Founded in 1850, Urbana University of the eponymous Ohio city is one of the state’s historic treasures. Iconic figures such as the Swedish philosopher Emanuel Swedenborg, and early American John Chapman (better known as Johnny Appleseed) had a hand in establishing the school and imparting the message of its founders. More than 160 years later, Urbana University continues to disseminate the merits of a liberal arts education, and draws about 1,500 young learners to nearby student housing. The city of Urbana and the educational opportunities at the institution keep Urbana University a target among many in the area who are pursuing student living.
With a dedication to the liberal arts, Urbana University offers 28 undergraduate majors, as well as graduate programs in Nursing, Education, Business Administration, Criminal Justice Administration, and a Post-Baccalaureate program in Teacher Licensure. Student apartments around Western Ohio occupy students who meet at one of Urbana’s off-campus locations, including cites in Bellefontaine, Dayton, Kettering, Marysville, Piqua and Springfield.
Students at the school’s main campus in Urbana also occasionally decide to rent off campus housing. In particular, South Main Street and State Route 29 are popular areas for student living, as they host a variety of attractions. Some student favorites include Bracken’s Pub, Catfish Jones, Teabaggers, and the Urbana Twin Cinema.
