Lakeland Community College, OH

In 1964, residents from the Lake County region of Ohio convened to debate the establishment of a community college in the area. Three years later, Lakeland Community College became the first college in the state founded by a vote of the people. In retrospect, the vote was a prudent one, as today more than 12,000 students take advantage of Lakeland Community College classes and student housing as they pursue a variety of degrees. With its main campus in Kirtland, Ohio, and satellite schools in Madison, Painesville and Willowick, Lakeland Community College allows students from around the state to access its bounty of programs and its student living options.

Lakeland offers its students more than 130 associate degrees and certificates that aim to prepare them for careers or transfer to a four-year institution. Because those in Lakeland Community College housing entertain all types of careers, the school’s programs run the gamut of disciplines: arts and humanities, business technologies, engineering technologies, science and health technologies, social science and public service. About 80 percent of students are employed while taking classes, and almost 60 percent are part-time students, adding to the popularity of renting a college apartment in the area.

Off campus housing at Lakeland Community College allows students to get to know their community better while working, studying and living there. The main campus in Kirtland is in a prime location, wedged between Cleveland, Lake Erie, and Gildersleeve Mountain.
