As its name suggests, Heidelberg University has a strong connection with its German roots, even 160 years after it was founded. When the school opened in 1850 by the German Reformed Church, it sought to provide an education and student living for the large number of German immigrants near Tiffin, Ohio, where it is still centered. While the school's first class only graduated five students, the college has blossomed into a lively liberal arts college that retains ties to its European origins. The school's Junior Year abroad program at Heidelberg University in Heidelberg, Germany, is the oldest exchange program between an American and German University. Located on the city's east side, on College Hill, many college apartments are located near the banks of the Sandusky River, near the popular hubs of East Perry and East Market Streets.
