Central State University, OH

Central State University, a historically black university in Wilberforce, Ohio, made its start in 1887 as a vocational school, specializing in training for teachers of young children. However, the basis of this educational system would change throughout the years to match the needs of students and of the southwestern Ohio community. Today, CSU has transformed into a four-year university with a wide variety of subject areas and student housing options. It remains the only public historically black university in the state, and in many ways its continual growth has reflected the achievements of its community.

Otherwise known as "C-State" to those in student housing, Central State University separates students into three colleges, depending on their field of study: the College of Education, the College of Arts and Sciences and the College of Business and Industry. Nearly 3,000 students enroll at CSU each year, many of them electing to find off campus housing in the surrounding Wilberforce neighborhood.

A university apartment at Central State University allows a measure of mobility for students as they pursue their studies. The school's main campus is located 4 miles from Xenia, 18 miles east of Dayton and about 55 miles each from Cincinnati and Columbus, Ohio. This location positions students to find the entertainment of city life at close proximity, in nearly any direction. Students who wish to stay local may find just as much diversion for their leisure hours. Since the town has a population of just over 1,500, Central State University plays heavily into local culture. A university apartment gives students a measure of independence as they explore the rural area and enjoy attractions like the African American Museum.
