Winston Salem State University, NC

Winston-Salem State University is a historically black public research institution, located in the eponymous city of Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Established in 1892, the school became instrumental in expanding student living opportunities for African American students in the region. WSSU was founded by Dr. Simon Green Atkins, the son of former slaves. By 1925, the institution, then a teacher’s college, made history by becoming the first African American school in the U.S. to grant degrees in teacher education. As a top tier comprehensive baccalaureate college, Winston-Salem State University continues to attract young scholars to student housing. A university apartment in Winston-Salem allows students to access “The City of the Arts,” so called for its dedication to fine arts and theater. Aside from this distinction, Winston-Salem also offers professional sports, shopping and a beautiful arrangement of public gardens.

Offering more than 40 academic majors and seven graduate degrees, WSSU enrolls students with a wide variety of interests. Today, about 6,4000 Winston-Salem students are divided between dormitories and off campus housing and enrolled in the School of Arts and Sciences, Business and Economics, Health Sciences, or Education and Human Performance. For much of the past decade, the U.S. News & World Report has ranked Winston-Salem State University within the top 30 public baccalaureate colleges in the South.

The city of Winston-Salem is home to four different four-year colleges and one 2-year institution, and has developed to support student living in the area. Most notably, the city, which has almost 230,000 residents, is known for its multitudinous museums, including the interactive SciWorks, the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art, and the Reynolda House Museum of American Art.
