Wake Technical Community College, a two-year college in Raleigh, North Carolina, has brought student living to the area since it first opened its doors in 1963. Initially, the school enrolled only about 30 students in its for-credit programs. Today, more than 18,000 students enroll in Wake Tech’s vocational training and credit programs, and make a residence of nearby student housing. Most students choose to live in dormitories or college apartments near the campus, about five miles south of downtown Raleigh, though off campus housing is also available near four branch campuses throughout Wake County.
The colleges is part of the North Carolina Community College System, which supports 58 institutions of higher learning in the Tar Heel State. Students often enroll at Wake Technical Community College in pursuit of an associate degree, college transfer or pre-professional training. To this end, the college offers more than 180 associate degrees, diplomas and certificates in the arts, sciences and general education. Student housing is available near Wake Tech’s Health Sciences Campus in east Raleigh, the Adult Education Center located north of downtown, the Western Wake Campus in Millpond Village, and the Northern Wake Campus, which was completed in North Raleigh in 2007.
Off campus housing near the school’s main campus places students in a tranquil neighborhood with easy access to the excitement of downtown Raleigh. The Raleigh bus system began serving the Wake Technical Community College campus in January 2009, making the route from a college apartment into the heart of the city an easy commute. In the surrounding neighborhood, students will find a commercial stretch on Fayetteville Road, directly adjacent to the campus. The area is also dotted with small lakes and ponds where may choose to spend some of their leisure hours.
