Shaw University, NC

Shaw University, a historically black university in Raleigh, North Carolina, was founded in 1865 and, as the oldest HBCU in the Southern U.S. became instrumental in establishing the region as a prominent center of education for African Americans. Student living at Shaw was initially established to provide opportunities for freed slaves, and by 1915 had nearly 300 students, evenly divided between men and women. Today, the school continues to attract ambitious pupils to nearby student housing and now enrolls about 2,800 individuals. College apartments that are available in the area place students on the periphery of downtown Raleigh and help to introduce them to the multitude of cultural and educational attracts that the city offers.

The private institution offers undergraduate degrees across an expansive liberal arts curriculum and benefits from research grants with UNC-Chapel Hill and Johns Hopkins University. Bachelor's degrees are offered through the departments of natural science, business and accounting, religion, philosophy, education and computer science, while graduate degrees are conferred in divinity, religious studies and early childhood instruction. A unique aspect of student living, Shaw University also performs relevant social research, such as its investigation into why no black World War II veterans were awarded the Medal of Honor.

Though Shaw University is composed of 10 campuses across North Carolina, most of the school's young scholars find student housing near the main campus in downtown Raleigh. Off campus housing in this region benefits from access to a variety of local attractions, including the North Carolina Museum of Art.
