All About

Living In Salem College, NC

Salem College, founded in Winston-Salem, North Carolina in 1772, is the oldest women’s college in the U.S. that remains a women’s college. The institution was originally established as a primary school by Moravians who believed in equal education for men and women, but transitioned to an academy and finally a college. Though Salem College is still officially classified as a women’s college, today men 23 years old or older may participate in student living through the school’s Continuing Education program. Many of those who enroll are invited to live on campus or find a Salem College apartment in the surrounding neighborhoods. Much of student housing is located in downtown Winston-Salem, a vibrant city with much to offer in the way of food, entertainment and culture. The so-called “City of the Arts,” keeps students engaged and busy, as they earn their degrees.

According to the school’s website, Salem College encourages students to strengthen their human faculties and capacities for service, professional life and leadership during their time at the school. When the young scholars of Salem College arrive at student housing they are aided in this goal by gaining access to a culturally rich city and an expansive liberal arts curriculum. Students may work toward Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Music, or Bachelor of Science in Business Administration degrees. Meanwhile, graduate students are invited to earn Masters degrees in Teach and in Education. Forbes Magazine recently ranked Salem 67th among the nation’s best colleges.

Student living at Salem College is enhanced by popular student events, such as Fall Fest, the Sophomore/Senior banquet and Founder’s Day Convocation, as well as a comfortable off campus community. Of the college’s approximately 1,100 students, about 450 live on campus, while the remainder find off campus housing. Many students take residence in the area surrounding the college, near the Salem Creek Greenway, as well Central Park.
