Catawba Valley Community College, NC

Catawba College, founded in Newton, North Carolina, in 1851, now makes its home in the vibrant city of Salisbury, where a pervasive appreciation for the arts sets the tone for the community and for student living. As part of the Salisbury community since 1925, Catawba is entrenched in local events and festivals, and even offers off campus housing in the community.

Affiliated with the United Church of Christ, the college “draws strength from Judeo-Christian values, sustains a dynamic community of leaders and seeks to unite a diverse population of students, faculty and staff as active co-participants in scholarship and service,” says the Catawba College mission statement. The institution’s history of strong academics and comfortable student living has made it a common choice among ambitious undergraduates in the area.

The college aims to provide an education that blends liberal arts and academic competencies with career preparation. Currently, those in Catawba College student housing may earn a Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Fine Arts in more than 30 majors and 22 concentrations. In addition, the college offers convenient student living arrangements for working adults through the School of Evening and Graduate Studies. Through this program, students may earn Bachelor of Business Administration degrees as well as both undergraduate and graduate degrees in Education. Catawba College was recently listed as 17th on the U.S. News and World Report’s list of best baccalaureate colleges in the South.

The approximately 1,300 undergraduates who attend Catawba College are divided among residences on campus as well as off campus housing and college apartments.
