Living In Barton College, NC

Barton College, a private liberal arts college in central North Carolina, was founded by the Disciples of Christ in 1902 as Atlantic Christian College. Those interested in student living at Barton are invited to investigate the college's home in the city of Wilson, where local sports teams, annual festivals and a tranquil environment establish a pleasant atmosphere and social scene. With about 50,000 residents, the city is both manageable and brimming with activity. Student housing places many of Barton's young scholars in dormitories or college apartments near campus, in the Wilson community. Complete with a bus system and Amtrak station, the city makes it convenient for students to come and go from their off campus housing to campus, and to other parts of the city and state. In addition to the school's growing reputation, its comfortable lifestyle and location are main factors in attracting increasingly more students to Barton College.

Recently, enrollment at Barton has leveled off at nearly 1,200 undergraduate students, who enjoy a tidy 11 to 1 student-to-faculty ratio. As with most liberal arts schools, Barton offers a wide variety of academic specialties, including 32 majors and pre-professional programs, and a wide variety of minors. Academics are divided into five schools, including the Schools of Arts and Sciences, Behavioral Sciences, Business, Education and Nursing. In the past several years, student living at Barton College has gained recognition, ranking among the Princeton Review's "Best Southeastern Colleges."

Off campus, the appeal of Wilson, North Carolina, matches the appeal of Barton College. Students with student housing in the community gain easy access to popular events like the summertime baseball games of the Wilson Tobs, who play in the collegiate Coastal Plain League at Fleming Stadium. Additionally, the local culture can be felt in Wilson's annual Whirligig Festival each November. The event features a contest to see who can build the best whirligig - the spinning ornaments of seen on front lawns.
