The United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA), more commonly known as Kings Point, is the officer training ground for the U.S. Merchant Marine, the civilian fleet of merchant ships responsible for carrying cargo and, during times of war, military troops. Students, known at the Academy as midshipmen, living in college apartments are trained in a variety of seaworthy disciplines such as maritime engineering, navigation, ship's administration, international law, maritime law, customs, and personnel management.
Completed in 1943, the USMMA was dedicated by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt and immediately began training desperately-needed officers for the war effort. Later, in 1974, the USMMA became the first federal service academy to accept women. Like other branches of the military, the Academy requires all applicants to be nominated by a member of Congress in addition to strong academic scores.
Located along the North Shore of Long Island in Nassau County, midshipmen living in USMMA student housing and university apartments will be in close proximity to New York City and Long Island's beautiful beaches and shore culture. In tandem with the Academy, student living also includes access to the USMMA Maritime Museum. Literary fans will also note that writer F. Scott Fitzgerald lived in the area and that Kings Point served as the inspiration for West Egg, the fictional setting his famous novel, The Great Gatsby.
