Residing in the village of Canton, New York, St. Lawrence University (SLU) offers a four-year liberal arts education along with a small focus on graduate-level studies. Among the available undergraduate majors are anthropology, biochemistry, mathematics, neuroscience, sociology, and modern languages. The Canton village is located in northern New York State, close to the Canadian border. Students living in university housing or off campus housing will find themselves less than two hours from the Canadian capital of Ottawa, Ontario and its many cultural and historic landmarks.
Founded in 1856, SLU began as an institute of the Universalist Church. However, due to some of the progressive ideals found in its Theological School, St. Lawrence became a non-denominational school in modern times. The university also places heavy emphasis on international education, pushing students to study abroad or throughout the United States for exposure to different educational values and cultures.
St. Lawrence is also home to the second-oldest college outing club, behind Dartmouth College, which allows students to hike the Adirondacks, ski, camp, raft, and perform other outdoor activities. And as a member of the NCAA's Division I in men's and women's hockey, the varsity Saints are often a contender for the national championship each year. Other major sports at SLU are men's and women's basketball, soccer, swimming, and wrestling.
