The school, located in the Bronx, New York, on the Throggs Neck peninsula, was founded in 1874, the first of its kind to be established in the U.S. One of the more storied institutions in the country, Maritime College at Fort Schuyler was created by the New York state legislature following a decline in the American maritime industry after the Civil War. Today, university apartments remain popular among students with an interest these fields, as well as positions with the U.S. Merchant Marines.

The school offers four different kinds of Bachelor of Engineering degrees, eight Bachelor of Science degrees, Bachelor degrees in marine electronic systems and naval architecture, as well as a Master's program in International Transportation Management, and several graduate certificate programs. In addition, student living at the school gives these scholars the option to combine their bachelor's degree program with a preparation course for professional license as a U.S. Merchant Marine Officer.

The actual Fort Schuyler, dating back to the war of 1812, provides a history lesson for students. Throughout the years, the area bordering many college apartments has functioned as a fort, Civil War prison, college, and museum.
