Located in primarily in Saratoga Springs, with other locations spread throughout New York, Empire State College (ESC) was founded in 1971 as a part of the State University of New York (SUNY) system of colleges. Unlike the other SUNY higher education institutions, ESC was created with the intention of providing distinctive, nontraditional teaching and learning designed around faculty mentors and individual degree programs.
The majority of students at ESC are working adults living in an off campus apartment or student apartment pursuing associate, bachelor's and master's degree programs, either on site or online. The Center for Distance learning allows adult students to earn their degree from virtually any location on Earth, making ESC a versatile school in addition to its affordability. The school also offers unique programs for students from Greece, Lebanon and the Czech Republic as well as partnerships with the military and various labor unions throughout the nation.
Degree programs at the college include associate in arts, associate in science, bachelor of arts, bachelor of science, bachelor of professional studies and bachelor of science in nursing. Graduate programs include masters in labor and policy studies, social policy, liberal studies, business and teaching. Student living and university living at ESC is varied, as the school contains several campuses throughout New York and is geared towards working adults.
