Located on the North Shore of Long Island in Stony Brook, Stony Brook University is a member campus of the State University of New York (SUNY) system. The university was originally founded in 1957 as the State University College on Long Island with the purpose of training high school teachers in math and science education. Stony Brook is the only one of the SUNY University Centers to be established after the formation of the system.
