Hobart and William Smith Colleges were formed as two separate colleges in 1822 and 1908, respectively. Hobart College was intended for men, while William Smith College was formed for women. Today, the colleges operate under a coordinate system that gives students a rich heritage and interdisciplinary education. Although all students share the same campus, faculty, curriculum and administration, men and women still graduate from their respective college.

The independent colleges provide a liberal arts education to 2,216 students.
