Five Towns College was initially planned to be located in the southwestern section of Nassau County known as "the Five Towns," but ended up in Merrick when its doors opened in 1974. School champions Stanley G. Cohen and Lorraine Kleinman-Cohen originally intended the school to specialize in business education, but over the years developed a reputation for its exceptional music programs - its stated mission being "dedicated to excellence in learning, teaching, and scholarship, the College celebrates the worlds of music, median business, teaching, the performing arts and the entertainment industry." In 1992, the school moved to its current location in Dix Hills.
