A member of the State University of New York system, the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) is located in the downtown Manhattan neighborhood of Chelsea. FIT has been ranked among the very top fashion schools in the world, with about 10,000 students enrolled, and provides programs in business, technology, design, art and fashion. Among some of FIT's well-known alumni are Calvin Klein, Joel Schumacher, Karen Allen and Naomi Sims.
Founded in 1944, FIT serves full-time and part-time students living in university housing or an off campus apartment from its location in Chelsea. The campus is comprised of nine buildings which include a variety of studios, workshops and galleries tailored towards FIT's focus on fashion, art and technology. The school is also home to the Museum at FIT, founded in 1967, which houses exhibits of art and design related to fashion from a number of well-known designers such as Dior, Chanel, Adrian and Balenciaga. The Gallery FIT displays works from FIT students and faculty.
