I discovered a rat while laying on my couch. It rattled my baking pan while menacing over a few leftover breadcrumbs. I jumped and it ran back through the gas pipe. Apparently, this has been an issue. I've heard scratching at night while in bed now for six months. I thought it was my neighbor's cat. It wasn't. Today, I lifted the oven cover to uncover years of rat feces, some of it caked on. I spent four hours cleaning it queasily. I called the super upon my discovery. He said there wasn't anything he could do. He's known for his inaction. I believe him to represent the agency which owns the building. There's a take it or leave it policy. It's the cheapest place to live in Hackensack. The CJ Lombardo agency knows this, and knows that most if not all its tenants have nowhere else to go. There have been other issues: cockroaches and mice. This is different though. I spoke with all the tenants. Many have similar stories. According to one, a few years ago the entire building attempted to unite in an effort to pressure the Lombardos into holding up their end. No luck. I spoke with an elderly couple, unable to leave due to circumstances beyond their control. The husband has killed three rats. Another tenant saw a rat twice in his kitchen. Another tenant's cat stares at the heater all day everyday. The tenant knows there's something sinister behind that wall. All are scared to complain. I spoke with another tenant. She cried and called the super. He came over. She rents one of the more expensive units. He told me to stop talking. I showed her the rat droppings right in his face. She left today. He initially tried to blame me, that it was my fault the rats had come in. He claimed that there was rice behind the oven, inferring that I had did it. It wasn't rice. It was the plaster that the rats had chewed through.
