I lived here for 2 years. If you are okay living with roommates that you don't know this is a good place to live. My first year they didn't have enough renters and I lived alone like a king. The interior is pretty fancy, the kitchen area is large and the living room is spacious to have guests. In my second year I experienced all the 'benefits' of having roommates. Dishes are routinely left uncleaned, floors dirty, people stay up late when you want to sleep, etc, etc. If you can guarantee that your roommates behavior is to your liking or if nothing of the above bothers you then go ahead, this is a cool place to live in.
Utilities are included which is a plus, you only have to worry about one lump sum for rent and that's all.
The corridors are always clean and smell nicely in the morning due to daily maintenance so that's nice. The place has a fancy feel to it all over.
In the years I lived here they changed 3 building managers not sure what the reason for it. My maintenance tickets would usually be closed fast in a day or two, so they are quite responsive to most requests. I have to warn you they have a problem with fire alarms though. In the first year the fire alarms would go off almost every other week. And when it goes off in a neighboring room which is vacant that is not fun. One time the fire alarm went off in my room and I made tickets for it 2-ce and after the second repair it still would go off for no reason randomly. So I had to manually remove it and live without it -- just got frustrated of them not being able to fix it.
With that said and my frustration about fire alarms vented, I'll still give this place 4 stars.
When I first moved in I was told I wasn't able to stay in my own assigned room. I had to stay in a completely different unit down the hall even though they knew a week in advance I was coming and even called to confirm it. I was told I couldn't move in because they needed to paint and clean the room. I waited a full day in a half until I was finally able to even step foot in my actual room. Needless to say when I did, nothing had been cleaned. There were food stains in the freezer, food all over the microwave walls, dishes had food stuck to them, the refrigerator shelves looked frosted over with food still inside of it. My family and I cleaned every dish, including all the shelves from the refrigerator, literally everything. Then the next day when one of my roommates was going to move in they had her put her stuff in a different room because her's hadn't been cleaned either. I was not happy, and I will forever be unhappy by the whole situation. Southwood Properties does not have the proper resources and does not manage their time wisely. I highly suggest a different apartment unless you want to waste your time and deal with a mess.
The apartments are very clean and has all the amenities one could ask for. I've met one of my room mates since moving in, real friendly. The second night I was here the power went out and I called the maintenance man who answered the phone right away when I was expecting a machine. He informed me of the situation and assured me it was being fixed. The fixures including furniture here are up to date. The salesperson went over the paperwork thoroughly and made sure all questions were answered. The building seems safe with its codes and locks on the bedroom door. The only reason why I didn't give them five total stars is because I don't like that there's an 18.00 fee to use my credit card to pay rent online and I thought linens were provided but upon moving in I found out that they weren't and had to buy my own. Totally fine with this but would have liked to know this prior to moving in so there would be no surprises. FYI If you use your bank checking information than there is no fee, only if you use your credit card and everything else was provided as promised. So all in all, I'm thankful that I had found this property and I'm proud to call it my home.
Close to MSU if youre wanting that. Rent is fairly reasonable. Apartment is furnished, included stuff for the kitchen, but I would suggest bringing your own anyway because of the quality of it. Apartment is VERY noisy. Not so much from the building itself, but the apartment next door. The noise from the other apartment was constant and got really annoying. I could hear their full conversations, even after a few complaints. The walls in the apartment are also very thin, which makes it kind of hard when roommates have different schedules and are awake/asleep at different times. Building manager was awesome, very helpful.
Not a bad simple place to live. Chose this apartment due to its location close to MSU campus. Like every apartment complex, the noise is always there. Had issues with neighbors in another building being too loud and property manager addressed the issue right away. Walls in the apartment are thin, I can hear a conversation in my bedroom, on one side of apartment, from roommate on the other side of the apartment. The 2 smaller rooms are pretty small but if you organize the right way you can maximize your space. Having your own bathroom is a very nice perk! Even though all the kitchen essentials were provided, I did bring my own and am happy I did! Not the best quality but if you're just not wanting to buy your own or first time living on own then this is a great feature for you. All-in-all, good place to live if you want something close to campus and want practically everything you need (kitchen and furniture wise) included.
