Recognized by many people as one of the top liberal arts schools in the southeast, Tougaloo College has risen from humble beginnings to become a premier institution in the region. With a rigorous academic catalog and an engaging atmosphere, Tougaloo offers students a fulfilling college experience whether they live in university housing or an off-campus apartment.
Tougaloo College was founded in 1869 as a school to train African American teachers, and it has certainly changed a lot since then. By the turn of the century it had greatly expanded its academic offerings and today is home to around 900 undergraduate students, many of whom leave the university well prepared for the challenges of professional life.
Although teaching is still a popular plan of study at Tougaloo, today's graduates also earn degrees in many other areas. Specifically, the school offers 29 different majors in subjects ranging from computer science to economics to religious studies, and thanks to a small student-to-faculty ratio, each student gets the attention he or she needs to thrive in the classroom.
Outside of academics, Tougaloo has much more to offer. Along with numerous clubs and organizations, Tougaloo also has a number of thriving athletic programs. The Bulldogs compete in eight different sports including men's and women's basketball, cross country and tennis.
Tougaloo College is located in the small town of Tougaloo, Mississippi. Despite its small size, students looking to get out of their college apartment can head south to the nearby bustling city of Jackson.
