Mississippi University for Women is one of the most historic schools in the country. Established in 1884, the school was the first public university for women in the United States, and it has since grown to become a well-respected institution with roots firmly grounded in the liberal arts. Mississippi University for Women was originally founded in the hopes of preparing female students for the workforce, and while that is still one of its many goals it has grown a lot since then. Despite its name, the school started offering admission to men in 1984, and today is home to almost 2,500 students.

With a population of about 26,000, Columbus offers a quaint suburban feel while still being a short drive from cities like Jackson, Tupelo and Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Columbus is also a history-buff's dream, as it played an integral role in the Civil War.
