Saint Olaf College, MN

Saint Olaf College, a private, liberal arts institution in southern Minnesota, is named after a former king and patron saint of Norway, and was founded to serve a predominantly Norwegian-American population in the area. In 1874, a group of immigrant pastors and farmers founded the institution, and student living has thrived at the college ever since. Set in the city of Northfield, Saint Olaf College sits on a picturesque, 300-acre campus, known as "The Hill." Student housing here, much of which overlooks the Cannon River Valley, can be found both on campus and in the Northfield community. Those who rent off campus housing gain the opportunity to procure a college apartment in their preferred neighborhood - atop the perch of the St. Olaf campus, or several blocks east, closer to the city's downtown district.

Throughout its history, St. Olaf College has distinguished itself through academic rigor and success. The college offers 39 majors for the bachelor of arts degree, four for the bachelor of music degree and 19 other areas of concentration. It's world-renowned music program, featuring a band, choir and orchestra, has operated since 1903 and continues to make critically acclaimed international tours, occurring once every three years. Saint Olaf ranks 8th overall among baccalaureate colleges in the number of graduates who eventually earn doctoral degrees, and was ranked as the nation's 47th best college overall in the U.S. News and World Report's 2009 rankings. According to the Pioneer Press, an average of six St. Olaf students are awarded the prestigious Fulbright Scholarship every year.

Students who elect to rent a Saint Olaf College apartment become part of a vibrant and intimate community of about 20,000 Northfield residents. Each year, the city holds an outdoor heritage festival called "The Defeat of Jesse James Days," which commemorates the 1876 resistance by local citizens against a local gang that attempted to rob one of Northfield's banks. The event includes reenactments of the robbery, a championship rodeo, carnival, car show, parade, music, and horseshoe hung - which can last for days and rewards the "finder" with a cash purse.
