Saint Mary's University of Minnesota, MN

Located in the southern Minnesota community of Winona, St. Mary's University of Minnesota is a private university in the Lasallian Catholic tradition. The school was originally established in 1912 by the Bishop Patrick R. Heffron as an educational institution catering toward young men in the Winona Diocese. After its initial start as a junior college, the school began operating as a four-year college in 1925. In 1933, the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools bought St. Mary's - attracting a greater number of students to the school from throughout Minnesota and the upper Midwest. St. Mary's added several graduate programs from the 40s to 70s and underwent many changes in its institutional structure. In 1969, the university began accepting female students for the first time. St. Mary's officially changed its name to reflect its university status in 1995.

According to its mission statement, St. Mary's University of Minnesota "serves students through relevant and innovative educational programs, experiences and enterprises. The university is nourished by its Catholic intellectual, moral and cultural traditions and is inspired by excellence in teaching as modeled by Saint John Baptist de La Salle, founder of the Brothers of the Christian Schools."

Those living in student housing or an off campus apartment at St. Mary's have access to the university's distinguished academic programs and fields of study. Students may pursue undergraduate, graduate and doctoral degrees in concentrations such as History, English, Education, Chemistry, Business, Sociology, Mass Communication, Theology, Computer Science, Criminal Justice, Art & Design, Mathematics & Statistics and Physics.

Student living and university living at the school revolve around a variety of traditional campus student programs along with Christian-oriented community building initiatives. The St. Mary's Cardinals compete in the NCAA Division III in men's and women's sports such as softball, basketball, soccer, outdoor track and baseball.
