Situated in the Minnesota city of Bloomington, Northwestern Health Sciences University (NHSU) was initially founded in 1941 as the Northwestern College of Chiropractic by Dr. John B. Wolfe, a man who wanted to see new advances in medicine education and research come to the upper Midwest. Growing in scope throughout the World War II era, the school began expanding even further as veterans joined its student population in the late 40s. Over the years Northwestern continued to transform its organizational structure and curriculum, moving from Minneapolis to new facilities in St. Paul in 1965. In 1983, the school moved to its current location in Bloomington. Following a merger with the Minnesota Institute of Acupuncture and Herbal Studies in 1999, the institution shifted its name to Northwestern Health Sciences University. In addition to its existing resources, the institute created a massage therapy program in 2000. Today, NHSU provides exceptional medical education and study to the communities of Minnesota and throughout the Midwest and U.S.
According to its stated mission, NHSU exists "to advance and promote natural approaches to health through education, research, clinical services and community involvement." This mission includes the vision "to be the University of Choice for natural and integrative health care. We promote conservative health care approaches that focus on the whole person. We provide leadership to develop collaborative and integrative health care models that support clinical research, prepare students for successful careers and encourage lifelong learning in service to our community."
