Located in Minnesota's Twin Cities, the Minneapolis College of Art & Design (MCAD) has been a major source of artistic education in Midwest since its humble beginnings more than a century ago. It was Initially founded in 1886 as the Minneapolis School of Fine Arts by the Society of Fine Arts, the small school made important strides at the end of the 19th century in developing art education in America. It wasn't until 1915 that the school found enough money to build new facilities, which would become known as the Minneapolis Institute of Arts. At the end of the 1950s, the Minneapolis School of Art became one of the first three institutions in the country to be accredited for artistic education. In 1970, the school shifted its name to the Minneapolis College of Art and Design, and in 1988, it became autonomous from the Society of Fine Arts and Institute of Arts.
According to its mission statement, MCAD "educates individuals to be professional artists and designers, pioneering thinkers, creative leaders and engaged global citizens." This mission is accomplished with the vision of "transforming[ing] the world through creativity and purpose" and values of students first, academic and institutional excellence, creativity and innovation, community involvement and engagement.
