College of Visual Arts, MN

Located in beautiful St. Paul, Minnesota, the College of Visual Arts has a long and storied history that dates back to 1924 when it was known as the Mills College of Art and Advertising. Operating under this name for many years, the college was taken over by prominent St. Paul artist and educator Lowell Bobleter in 1948. Going beyond traditional art education, Bobleter expanded the schools' curriculum to include practical artistic applications, humanities and natural sciences. In addition, he became the school's president and renamed the institution the School of Associated Arts. Over the years, the institution grew steadily, and in 1989, it shifted its name once again to the College of Associated Arts. It wasn't until 1995 that the school settled on its current name.

According to the College of Visual Arts mission statement, the institution "provides a collaborative environment that focuses on individual student development by fully integrating the study of the liberal arts and the visual arts. [CVA] cultivate[s] a worldview that recognizes the value of art and design in promoting pride in place and responsible citizenship."

Those living in student housing or an off campus apartment at the College of Visual Arts have access to its distinguished academic programs and fields of study. Students participate in a First Year Foundation Program during their freshman year. This basic coursework puts them on a path to explore their intended concentrations in-depth during their sophomore, junior and senior years - culminating with a capstone senior project.

Student living and university living at the College of Visual Arts revolve around a variety of traditional campus student programs and activities. As an arts school, students are constantly exposed to works and lectures given by established visiting artists and educators.
