College of Saint Scholastica, MN

The sole independent private college in the northeastern portion of Minnesota, the College of St. Scholastica has been providing quality education for a century. The school was initially founded by a group of Benedictine Sisters of the Roman Catholic Church who had ventured out into the Midwest. In 1892, Mother Scholastica Kerst and 28 sisters arrived in Duluth and immediately recognized that the small town was in desperate need of an educational institution. They created a convent and high school named Sacred Heart Institute, which expanded through the turn of the century. By 1912, the school had grown in enrollment and began offering junior college courses - renaming itself the College of St. Scholastica. Twelve years later, the college developed its four-year liberal arts curriculum and established the framework for it's current form as a educational landmark in Minnesota.

According to its mission statement, the College of St. Scholastica derives its values from the Benedictine Heritage, including community, hospitality, respect, stewardship and love of learning. By combining academic pursuits with the Christian spirit espoused by the Benedictine Sisters, the school hopes to create informed, responsible leaders of the community.
