Situated in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Augsburg College is one of the premier Lutheran academic institutions in the state. The school was initially founded in 1869 by Norwegian Lutheran immigrants - named in honor of the historic Lutheran confession of faith that occurred in Augsburg, Germany in 1530. Augsburg College moved from its original location in Marshall, Wisconsin to Minneapolis in 1872. After many years of functioning as a primarily religious institution, organizational changes following World War I set the school on a path to appeal to a broader range of students. The college division of Augsburg soon overshadowed the initial seminary in the wake of World War II. In 1963, the seminary officially broke away and moved to the nearby Luther Seminary in St. Paul.
According to its stated mission, Augsburg College "educates students to be informed citizens, thoughtful stewards, critical thinkers and responsible leaders. The Augsburg experience is supported by an engaged community that is committed to intentional diversity in its life and work. An Augsburg education is defined by excellence in the liberal arts and professional studies, guided by the faith and values of the Lutheran Church, and shaped by its urban and global settings."
Those living in student housing or an off campus apartment at Augsburg College have access to the school's excellent academic programs and fields of study. Students may pursue undergraduate and graduate degrees in departments like Health and Physical Education, Biology, Art, Education, English, Philosophy, Music, Mathematics, Environmental Studies, Women's Studies and more.
Student living and university living at the school revolve around a variety of traditional campus student activities and organizations. The Augsburg Auggies compete in the NCAA Division III in men's and women's sports such as ice hockey, baseball, basketball, wrestling, golf and swimming.
