All About

Living in Schoolcraft College, MI

Schoolcraft College was established by the citizens of Livonia, Plymouth-Canton, Garden City and Clarenceville school districts as a two-year community college in 1961. Over the next year, funds and resources were gathered to open the school and a campus location was selected at the Reynold Esch property in Livonia. In 1963, the school shifted its name from the original Northwest Wayne County Community College to Schoolcraft College. The new name was proposed by Dean of Students Lois Waterman in honor of Henry Rowe Schoolcraft, an explorer and scholar in the 19th century who was instrumental to the early development of the state of Michigan. Since these early beginnings, Schoolcraft College has evolved to become a vital educational institution serving the local community.

According to its mission statement, "Schoolcraft is a comprehensive, open door, community-based College. The mission of the college is to provide a transformational learning experience designed to increase the capacity of individuals and groups to achieve intellectual, social and economic goals." This mission includes a vision "to be a first choice provider of educational services, a competent organization, functioning with integrity, behaving strategically and providing value beyond expectations."

Those living in student housing or an off campus apartment at Schoolcraft College have access to the school's unique academic programs and fields of study. Students may pursue associate's degrees in field like Arabic, business information technology, accounting, broadcast communications, computer graphics technology, computer information systems, liberal arts, medical transcription, music, learning resources, political science and theater.
