Oakland University was initially created in 1959 thanks to a donation from the late Alfred and Matilda Wilson to Michigan State University with the hopes of founding a new college in Oakland County. The school was originally known as Michigan State University - Oakland and located on the Wilson's 1,5000-acre estate. The main campus was situated in the city of Auburn Hills and remains there today. In 1963, the school was renamed Oakland University by the state legislature. Seven years later, the university was granted independence from the Michigan State University system continues to function as an autonomous institution for higher education serving the local community and the nation.
According to its mission statement, "Oakland University has a three-fold mission. It offers instructional programs of high quality that lead to degrees at the baccalaureate, master's and doctoral levels, as well as programs in continuing education; it advances knowledge and promotes the arts through research, scholarship and creative activity; and it renders significant public service. In all its activities, the university strives to exemplify educational leadership."
