All about

Northern Michigan University, MI

Northern Michigan University, located in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, has brought student living to the somewhat remote area since it was established in 1899 with a focus on teacher education programs. From 32 students in its inaugural year, NMU has blossomed into the Upper Peninsula's largest university, accommodating nearly 10,000 undergraduates and graduates in student housing. The institution is set in the city of Marquette, a short walk from the expansive and beautiful Marquette Bay. The city, which is home to about 21,000 residents, offers a cultural experience defined by the region's many parks, outdoor recreation and sporting facilities, museums and art galleries. Off campus housing is available surrounding the Northern Michigan University campus, granting students easy access to the city's two popular beaches and myriad of entertainment options along Presque Isle Avenue.

Academically, NMU is divided into five schools and colleges, which include the College of Arts and Sciences, the Cisler College of Business, the College of Graduate Studies, the College of Professional Studies (which encompasses schools of education, nursing and technology), and the School of Art and Design, which opened in 2007. Within these divisions, the university offers 180 degree programs that span the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. A unique component of student living, all full-time students receive a laptop computer due to the school's Teaching, Learning and Communication initiative.

In addition to providing ten residence halls, NMU operates seven university apartment buildings on campus, and allows students to reside in off campus housing. Those who elect to that the latter route become part of a Marquette community that offers such attractions as the Harbor Lighthouse, the County History Museum, the DeVos Art Museum, and the Oasis Gallery for Contemporary Art. Off campus student housing also places NMU's young scholars near a half-dozen parks, spread in each direction surrounding the campus.
