Lake Superior State University, MI

Lake Superior State University is located in the northeastern corner of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, less than two miles from the Canadian border. The school was founded in 1946 to meet growing educational needs in the area, and to accommodate veterans who returned from World War II seeking student living opportunities. Today, the institution provides student housing for more than 2,500 undergraduates and a handful of postgraduates, and has regional learning centers in Gaylord, Escanaba, Petoskey and Dearborn, all in Michigan. It’s main campus, in the city of Sault Ste. Marie, is the most popular site to rent a university apartment, and local culture reflects the area’s embrace of outdoor recreation, winter sports, and its international flare. As Michigan’s smallest public university, Lake Superior State University provides an intimate setting that attracts many young learners.

The unique location of LLSU, adjacent to the bays and waterways that flow from Lake Superior, has allowed the school to develop a unique curriculum, that his become known for its programs in fisheries and wildlife management, engineering chemistry, environmental sciences and geology. The school is one of just three U.S. universities to offer a four-year fire science program, and Michigan’s only higher education institution with an undergraduate degree program in environmental health. Student living also extends to those interested in forensic sciences, recreation management, nursing, teacher education and legal studies. Lake Superior State University primarily confers bachelor’s and associate’s degrees, with the exception of a Master’s of Arts degree in curriculum and instruction.

Off campus housing in Sault Ste. Marie puts students in a community that revels in its winter events, and benefits from a friendly international culture with a heavy Canadian influence. Community events include the annual Snowman Burning, which mirrors a German tradition and symbolically marks the end of winter, as well as snowmobile races that run near the LSSU campus.
