Kettering University, located in Flint, Michigan, shares a deeply-rooted connection with the American automotive industry in general and with General Motors in particular. Founded in 1919 as the School of Automobile Trades, the institution offered student living to those preparing for careers in industry and technology. After several name and ownership changes, the school became the General Motors Institute, operated by the auto industry giant that still makes its home in the city of Flint. Today, Kettering University continues to offer degrees in a variety of technical fields, and to invest in the future of these industries. Currently, nearly 2,000 undergraduates and several hundred postgraduates enroll at Kettering University.

Student living has been enhanced by recent additions to the campus, including the fuel cell systems and powertrain integration labs in the Engineering and Science Center, and one of the few crash safety centers in a U.S. college or university.
More than half of the student body at Kettering University resides in student housing in the Flint community. Off campus housing is available throughout the neighborhood, which is within walking distance of Flint's downtown district. Student hangouts dot the area, ranging from the wings joint Chevy In the Hole, to the Good Beans Cafe for a coffee break, to the nearby hockey, rugby and football arenas.
