Finlandia University, MI

When Finlandia University was established in Hancock, Michigan, in 1896, its founders in the Evangelical Lutheran Church America saw the institution as a way to educate the scores of immigrants newly arrived in the area, and to preserve Finnish identity among members of this group. Today, student living at the university retains its ties to Finnish American heritage, and invites both graduate and undergraduate students to a city in Michigan's northern peninsula that celebrates that heritage along with a list of other community events. Finlandia University, the only private university in the Upper Peninsula, grants access to student housing both on campus and in the Hancock community. Today, more than 500 students enroll at the institution, divided between dormitories and off campus housing such as university apartments.

Academically, the university is divided into four schools and colleges: The International School of Art & Design, the International School of Business, the Suomi College of Arts and Sciences, and the College of Health Sciences. Students may work toward a Bachelor of Fine Arts, Bachelor of Business Administration, Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Nursing, or Associate of Applied Science degrees in about 30 academic concentrations. Student living at Finlandia University also extends to the Jutlia Campus, which houses the International School of Art and Design, as well as the Finnish American Heritage Center, an on-campus facility that serves the school and Hancock community with a museum, art gallery, theater, historical archives, and monthly journal.

Those who elect to live in off campus housing join a neighborhood alongside Portage Lake, that includes a number of attractions. Within walking distance from a university apartment, students can reach Keweenaw National Historic Park, the lakeside Hancock Recreation Area, and downtown Hancock, where the Finnish festival Heikinpäivä is celebrated each winter. Other attractions include the Republic Bank Gallery and Turquoise Art Gallery.
