Ferris State University was originally founded by Woodbridge Nathan Ferris and his wife Helen Frances Gillespie as the Big Rapids Industrial School in 1884. A year later, the school changed its name to Ferris Industrial School while also adding a pharmacy department. As the institution evolved over the years, the name changed once again in 1894 to the Ferris Institute. In 1950, control of the school was handed over to the state of Michigan, and in 1963 the institute assumed the name Ferris State College. It wasn't until 1987 that the school settled on its current name. Today, the school continues to function, serving students from Michigan, the U.S. and around the world.
According to its mission statement, "Ferris State University prepares students for successful careers, responsible citizenship and lifelong learning. Through its many partnerships and its career-oriented, broad-based education, Ferris serves our rapidly changing global economy and society." This mission includes the vision of being "the recognized leader in integrative education, where theory meets practice throughout the curriculum and where multi-disciplinary skills important in a global economy are developed..."
