Eastern Michigan University was founded in 1849 by the Michigan State legislature as the Michigan State Normal School - primarily designed to educate public school teachers in the region. Only the sixth teachers' school in the nation, the institution operated for many years with only a classical course and an English Course. After a half century of service, the school changed its name in 1899 to Michigan State Normal College. Just over another 50 years later, its name changed once again to Eastern Michigan College and settled on its current title in 1959. Today, Eastern Michigan University is one of the state's premier academic institutions serving a broad range of students.
According to its mission statement, "Eastern Michigan University is committed to excellence in teaching through traditional and innovative approaches, the extension of knowledge through basic and applied research and creative and artistic expression. Building on a proud tradition of national leadership in the preparation of teachers, we maximize educational opportunities and personal and professional growth for students from diverse backgrounds through an array of baccalaureate, master's and doctoral programs."
