Located in the city of Grand Rapids, Michigan, Calvin College can trace its origins back to the mid-19th century. In 1857, Dutch settlers seeking religious freedom found their way to western Michigan and established the Christian Reformed Church. With this strong religious foundation in place, church leaders began making plans to form an educational institution to train new ministers. As a result, Calvin College and Seminary was officially opened in 1876. Over the years the college grew and expanded its curriculum to students not seeking an education in pre-theological studies. In 1906, the school's Literary Department became a two-year junior college, which soon transformed to a regular four-year institution. The school conferred its first Bachelor of Arts degree in 1921. Today, Calvin College remains an important player in Michigan's educational community - serving a diverse range of students.
According to its mission and vision statement, "Calvin College is a comprehensive liberal arts college in the Reformed tradition of historic Christianity. Through our learning, we seek to be agents of renewal in the academy, church and society. We pledge fidelity to Jesus Christ, offering out hearts and lives to do God's work in God's world." This mission emphasizes the school's purpose "to engage in vigorous liberal arts education that promotes lifelong Christian service… to produce substantial and challenging art and scholarship… and to perform all our tasks as a caring and diverse educational community."
