Andrews University can trace its origins back to 1874 with the formation of the Seventh-day Adventist institution Battle Creek College. In 1901, the school shifted campus locations to its current home in Berrien Springs, Michigan and adopted the name Emmanuel Missionary College. After a steady buildup of facilities and resources through the 30s, 40s and 50s, the college merged with the Washington, D.C.-based Potomac University and reorganized to form Andrews University - named after John Nevins Andrews, a major thinker and missionary in the Seventh-day Adventist Church. The school continued to grow and today it is the most well-known and respected institute of higher education in the Seventh-day Adventist tradition serving students from Michigan, the U.S. and from around the world.
According to its mission statement, "Andrews University, a distinctive Seventh-day Adventist institution, transforms its students by educating them to seek knowledge and affirm faith in order to change the world." Students will achieve these goals as they "engage in intellectual discovery and inquiry, demonstrate the ability to think clearly and critically, communicate effectively, understand life, learning and civic responsibility from a Christian point of view and demonstrate competence in their chosen disciplines and professions."
