Albion College, which gets its name from its home town in Albion, Michigan, first opened its doors in 1843 in a local Methodist Church that is now known as Wesleyan Seminary. By 1961, the institution had merged with a sister school to become a four-year college that offered student living and a comprehensive liberal arts education to both men and women. Albion College has preserved its affiliation to the United Methodist Church, though expanded it’s academic offerings through a variety of on-campus institutes and pre-professional programs. The educational offerings at Albion continue to attract individuals to student housing in the area, which ranges from dormitories to college apartments. Much of the school’s off campus housing is located at The Forks, the area where the north and south branches of the Kalamazoo River meet, and were the community holds the annual Festival of the Forks to celebrate the town’s English heritage.
“We are learning-centered and recognize that valuable learning takes place in and outside the classroom, on and off campus,” reads the Albion College mission statement. On campus, learning takes the form of courses that are organized into 30 undergraduate majors that lead to Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Fine Arts degrees. These programs are complemented by contributions from the Brown Honors Program, the Center for Sustainability and the Environment, the Fritz Shurmer Education Institute, and the Gerald R. Ford Institute for Public Policy and Service. Student living at Albion College recently ranked among the U.S. News and World Report’s top 100 liberal arts colleges, and Forbes magazine’s list of “Best Buys.”
Off campus, learning continues when students enter the Albion community by renting a college apartment. The school enrolls about 1,500 students, and many opt to reside in one of the off campus housing options that are available. Attributes of the surrounding community include the Whitehouse Nature Center, Victory Park, and Hungry Howie’s Pizza.
