The University of Massachusetts Lowell (UMass Lowell) was founded in 1975 following the partnership of two local institutions - the Lowell Technological Institute and Lowell State College. Both schools had been well-established institutions in the Lowell community prior to this partnership. In 1991, the University of Lowell was incorporated into the larger University of Massachusetts system.
According to its stated mission, UMass Lowell exists "to enhance the intellectual, personal and cultural development of our students through excellent, affordable educational programs. We seek to meet the demands of the Commonwealth today and into the future and support the development of sustainable technologies and communities through our unique focus on teaching, research, scholarships and engagement."

Students may pursue undergraduate and graduate level degrees through the Graduate School of Education, Francis College of Engineering, College of Fine Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences, School of Health & Environment, Manning School of Business and the College of Sciences.
Student living and university living at UMass Lowell revolves around a variety of traditional campus student activities and organizations. The River Hawks athletics programs compete primarily in the NCAA Division II, although the men's ice hockey team is in Division I. Men's and women's sports include baseball, basketball, soccer, track and field and cross country.
