University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, MA

The University of Massachusetts - Dartmouth has undergone several major transformations over the years. UMass Dartmouth originally began as two separate institutions, the New Bedford Textile School and the Bradford Durfee Textile School in Fall River, which were both founded by the Massachusetts State Legislature in 1895. In 1962, the two schools merged to form the Southeastern Massachusetts Technological Institute. After increased enrollment and demand for further academic programs, the school shifted to become Southeastern Massachusetts University (SMU) in 1969. It wasn't until 1991 when SMU was absorbed into the new University of Massachusetts system and officially became UMass Dartmouth.

According to its mission statement, UMass Dartmouth "distinguishes itself as a vibrant public university actively engaged in personalizing teaching and innovative research, and acting as an intellectual catalyst for regional and global economic, social and cultural development."
