Nichols College, MA

Nichols College was originally founded as Nichols Academy in 1815 by local industrialist Amasa Nichols. The academy benefited from contributions by other contemporary business leaders Samuel Slater and Hezekiah Conant - titans of cotton and textile manufacturing respectively. Nichols Academy closed in 1909, but in 1931 James Lawson Conrad founded Nichols Junior College on the academy's former site. The school was the first junior college for men on the East Coast as well as the first to grant an associate's degree in business administration. After closing for the duration of World War II, Nichols college achieved four-year status in 1958.
