The Massachusetts Maritime Academy in Buzzards Bay, Massachusetts, was established in 1891, making it the second oldest state maritime academy in the U.S. Though the institution was founded to train deck and engineering officers for the U.S. Merchant Marine, the academy has since adopted an expanded curriculum to prepare students for a variety of related careers, including service with the U.S. Armed Forces. The unique student living experience at Mass Maritime, or MMA, includes hands-on experiences and "Sea Terms" that are denied at most traditional institutions. While renting student housing in Buzzards Bay, MMA students can complete an undergraduate or graduate degree, or pursue professional studies in maritime-related fields.
Today, the Massachusetts Maritime Academy is composed of about 1,100 undergraduates and about 30 postgraduates. Undergrads may earn Bachelor of Science degrees in six areas, including Marine Transportation, Marine Engineering, Marine Safety & Environmental Protection, and Emergency Management. Master of Science degrees at MMA are offered in the areas of Emergency Management and Facilities Management. In addition, the student living experience is enhanced by Sea Terms, which occur between semesters and enlist students to prepare the USTS Kennedy for sailing.
