Lesley University began as the Lesley School in 1909 in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Founder Edith Lesley Wolfard sought to develop a teaching school geared towards professional instruction of kindergarten teachers - a movement that was just gaining traction at the time. From her living room, Edith Lesley helped many women at the time break out of their domestic roles and into the working world. After several years of growth and development, the Lesley School evolved into Lesley College in 1945. It wasn't until 2000 that the institution achieved its current university status.
Lesley University's mission states that it is "committed to active learning, scholarly research, critical inquiry and diverse forms of artistic practice through close mentoring relationships among students, faculty and practitioners in the field. Lesley prepares graduates with the knowledge, skill, understanding and ethical judgment to be catalysts who shape a more just, humane and sustainable world."
