Babson College was originally established as the Babson Institute in 1919. Founded by businessman Roger Babson, the Babson Institute sought to take an innovative and practical approach to business education - one that Babson felt traditional, academic programs overlooked. In combination with classroom work, the student experience centered largely on real-world business training and observation. In many ways, the Babson Institute operated like a regular office - keeping regular business hours, retaining a staff of secretaries and assistants and informative meetings with professional executives and industry leaders. Classes were also taught by actually businessmen, rather than professors.
Babson College's mission states that it "educates leaders who create great economic and social value - everywhere." In order to attain this goal, the school strives "to be known as the preeminent institution for Entrepreneurial Thought and Action and to be universally recognized for this leadership," to "embrace people, planet and profit issues simultaneously," to "extend our reach to have an impact on the world," to "create a diverse, multi-cultural, inclusive community of highly skilled students, faculty and staff" and to "be prosperous and sustainable, with ample resources for our work."
