Pillsbury Baptist Bible College, a Fundamentalist Baptist Christian college in southern Minnesota, had provided student living within the region since it was founded in 1877. Previously known as the Minnesota Academy and Pillsbury Military Academy, the institution re-opened in 1957 as the 4-year biblical arts college that continued to educate students for more than 50 years. The college had been set in Owatonna, Minnesota, a city of approximately 25,600 residents, which is known for its old prairie architecture and local hockey leagues. Student housing is scattered throughout the community, which is nestled into the Straight River, and flanked by a variety of public parks in every direction. Most recently, Pillsbury Baptist Bible College enrolled about 150 students, who could choose to live on campus, or in a college apartment in the area.
As a self-described biblical arts college, Pillsbury offered four-year programs culminating in Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science in Biblical Studies degrees, as well as several associate degree programs and a Bible certificate program. Student living extended beyond the classroom to several athletic teams, the Comets, which included baseball, wrestling, cross country, soccer and basketball for men, and volleyball, cross country, softball, cheerleading and basketball for women. Because of the campus' long history, on-campus structures such as Old Main and Kelly Hall were placed on the National Register of Historic Places and dubbed the Pillsbury Academy Campus Historic District.
Off campus housing offers its own list of cultural riches and attractions. In the center of downtown Owatonna, students could find the National Farmer's Bank, one of the premier pieces of America's "Prairie School of Architecture," that was erected in 1908. In addition, Pillsbury students with a college apartment are placed within walking distance of Central Park, the riverside Morehouse Park, and a spate of downtown bars and restaurants that help support student living.
