University of Southern Maine, ME

Widely regarded as one of the best public schools in the Northeast, the University of Southern Maine has grown to become a staple of the Pine Tree State's educational system. For well over 130 years, the school has offered a diverse and fulfilling student living experience, and with campuses in three different cities, there is plenty of opportunities for university housing.

The University of Southern Maine was founded in 1878 as Gorham Normal School, an institution primarily dedicated training teachers. However, it quickly expanded its academic offerings to include other scholarly pursuits. Then, by the 1970s it merged with the University of Maine at Portland and would eventually become the school it is today.

The school has certainly grown a lot since its early days in terms of academics. Students attending the University of Southern Maine can choose from a catalogue of 115 different areas of study. Majors include subjects ranging from biochemistry, geosciences and athletic training to political science, English and criminology. Additionally, with postgraduate degrees available, there is something for every one of the more than 10,000 students attending classes.

Anyone who lives on any of the three campuses knows that university living at the school is never boring. There are plenty of activities to take advantage of including recreational sports, and the famous University of Southern Maine Arboretum.

USM has campuses in Gorham and Lewiston, though most will likely want to spend time where the third is - Portland. One of the most picturesque cities in New England, Portland has plenty to offer, from beautiful Casco Bay to its delectable cuisine.
