Maine College of Art, ME

Situated in the heart of Portland, Maine, the Maine College of Art has been one of the leading arts educational institutions in the Northeast for well over a century. With a wide variety of degree programs available, the school attracts a number of talented students and provides a truly unique university living experience.

The Maine College of Art was founded in 1882 as the Portland Art Society, but it quickly grew in leaps and bounds. By the early 20th century it had developed a rigorous curriculum and it began granting degrees in the 1920s. Today it is home to about 300 undergraduates and 45 grads all working toward degrees in the fine arts.

The academic tradition at the Maine College of Art is firmly rooted in giving students a well-rounded experience. Although their first year is dedicated to providing them with a good knowledge base, the next several years are tailored specifically to their field. With majors including everything from Ceramics to New Media to Art History, there is certainly a career path for everyone.

Along with a fulfilling workload, Maine College of Art also offers plenty of student activities whether they are one of 140 people who live in university housing or those who head to an off-campus apartment. Anybody attending the school has the chance to participate in hikes, visit artist lectures or more recreational activities such as ping pong tournaments and regular movie nights.

Perhaps the school's greatest asset of all is its ideal location. Portland is the biggest city in Maine and has risen to become one of the most appealing vacation spots in the Northeast. There's something for everyone in the city whether they want to catch a Portland Seadogs baseball game or visit one of the many museums.
